  จากการศึกษาใหม่พบว่า กล่า 30% ของหญ้าทะเลทั่วโลกได้หายไปหลังจากเริ่มการเก็บข้อข้อมูลครั้งแรก และอัตราการลดลงกำลังเพิ่มขึ้น ศาสตราจารย์ Gary Kendrick ซึ่งเป็นนักชีววิทยาทะเลแห่งมหาวิทยาลัย University of Western Australia ในเมือง Perth และทีมวิจัยได้รายงานผลการวิจัยในวารสาร Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ฉบับอาทิตย์นี้
  “การหายไปของหญ้าทะเลค่อนข้างจะชัดเจน” กล่าวโดย Kendrick “ทุกปีเราเสียประมาณ 110 ตารางกิโลเมตรของหญ้าทะเลทั่วโลก” เขาและทีมวิจัยพบว่าตั้งแต่ปี 1980 หญ้าทะเลได้หายไปถึง 29% และอัตราโดยเฉลี่ยของการลดลงได้เพิ่มขึ้นถึง 0.9% ต่อปีตั้งแต่ช่วงก่อนปี 1940 และเพิ่มขึ้น 7% ต่อปีตั้งแต่ปี 1990

  นกเป็นสัตว์เพียงชนิดเดียวที่ได้โบยบินอย่างอิสระอยู่บนท้องฟ้าโดยไม่ต้องกังวลใดๆ แต่มนุษย์เราต่างหากที่เป็นฝ่ายพยายามจะขึ้นไปล่องลอยบนเวหาเช่นเดียวกับนก จนเกิดเป็นสิ่งประดิษฐ์ก้องโลกอย่าง “เครื่องบิน”

  แต่แล้ววันหนึึ่งมนุษย์อีกนั่นแหละที่พบว่า เจ้าสิ่งมีชีวิตเพียงชนิดเดียวบนท้องฟ้าเป็นตัวอันตรายของเจ้านกเหล็ก โดยเฉพาะช่วงที่เครื่องบินขึ้นและลง ซึ่งจัดเป็นช่วงอันตรายที่สุด

  ด้วยเหตุนี้จึงเกิดนักประดิษฐ์หัวใสที่จะหาวิธีกำจัดและขับไล่นกที่ก่อปัญหากวนใจเหล่านี้ ด้วยอุปกรณ์ บางอย่าง แต่เท่าที่ผ่านมาอุปกรณ์ที่ได้ผลที่สุละมีการใช้ในสนามบินชั้นนำหลายแห่งของโลก คือ การเปิดเสียงร้องเตือนภัยของนก หรือที่เรียกว่า “ อัลติม่า ซีสเติ่ม”

  นายแกร์รี่ เลนนอกซ์ หัวหน้าหน่วยดับเพลิงของสนามบินแคมบริจญ์ ซึ่งมีหน้าที่ดูแลความปลอดภัยทุกอย่างของสนามบิน รวมทั้งปัญหานกในสนามบินด้วยบอกว่า หากนกบินชนเครื่องบินอาจสร้างความเสียหายมหาศาลได้ ทางสนามบินจึงต้องดูแลความปลอดภัยของเครื่องบินที่มาใช้บริการที่สนามบินเป็นพิเศษ จึงมีการนำอุปกรณ์ดังกล่าวมาใช้ โดยเจ้าอุปกรณ์นี้ จะประกอบด้วยรูปของนกทุกชนิด เพื่อช่วยให้ผู้ใช้สามารถเลือกชนิดของเสียงร้องเตือนภัยของนกได้ตามที่ต้องการ รวมทั้งทิศทางและตำแหน่งที่นกบินเข้ามาจะถูกจดและบันทึกข้อมูลไว้ เพื่อช่วยให้สนามบินทราบข้อมูลของนกและความความเคลื่อนไหวของพวกมันในสนามบินตลอดทั้งปี
